French school trips - ‘les sorties scolaires’

French school trips - ‘les sorties scolaires’ - are a big part of school life here, and they go way beyond just a fun day out.

This time, it was five days in a windswept corner of Bretagne, where the main event was something called ‘char à voile’ - or sand yachting. Imagine a go-kart with a sail, racing across the beach at the mercy of the wind.

Back home sun-kissed and windblown, dragging sandy shoes and bursting with stories. Because that’s what these trips really teach: a little independence, a lot of confidence, and memories that stick around long after the sand is gone.

I wish my own school trips were this much fun 😀

Disneyland Paris is super fun and an easy day trip

Disneyland Paris is super fun and an easy day trip from the city—but did you know France has two other incredible theme parks worth adding to your list?

🎭 Puy du Fou – Located near the Loire Valley (about a 1-hour drive from Nantes), this isn’t a day trip from Paris, but it is absolutely worth the journey. Voted the Best Theme Park in the World, it’s unlike anything else—no rides, just jaw-dropping, immersive live shows that bring history to life with epic battles, special effects, and a whole lot of wow.

⚔️ Parc Astérix – Just outside Paris and very, very French. Based on the iconic comic books about Gaulish heroes Asterix and Obelix, it’s got more thrill rides than Disneyland and tends to be less crowded. It’s a blast for all ages.

While Disneyland Paris is open year-round, Puy du Fou and Parc Astérix are seasonal—both open from 5 April through November this year.

It might not have the global fame of the Louvre or

It might not have the global fame of the Louvre or the Orsay, but the Paris Museum of Modern Art absolutely holds its own. And it’s free to see – no ticket required. I’ve been there many times and have never seen it crowded.

💡Did you know it holds the largest painting in Paris?

Raoul Dufy’s La Fée Électricité — a 600-square-meter mural that literally wraps around an entire room. Commissioned for the 1937 World’s Fair, this massive, immersive artwork celebrates the history of electricity. You can spot 108 famous scientists and even artists like Claude Monet.

Beyond Dufy, catch masterpieces by Picasso, Matisse, Yves Klein, the Delaunays, and more.

There are art workshops for kids throughout the year. Check out their website for dates.

Planning a trip to Paris and unsure where to stay, especially as a first-time visitor? I recommend choosing a central area with a park nearby (preferably with a playground), key attractions within walking distance, and a true Parisian feel.

Below are my top picks for the best areas to stay. In the link below (and in my bio), you’ll find family-friendly hotel / apartment suggestions, along with more tips, in the latest article on my blog.

📍Le Marais (3rd & 4th Arrondissements): Where historic Paris meets modern cool—plenty of garden squares, stylish cafés, and close to the Pompidou Centre and Place des Vosges.

📍1st Arrondissement (Louvre / Tuileries): As central as it gets, with landmarks like the Louvre, Palais Royal, and Tuileries Gardens on your doorstep. Busier and pricier due to the prime location.

📍Latin Quarter & Saint-Germain-des-Prés (5th & 6th Arrondissements): Lively and quintessentially Parisian, home to the Luxembourg Gardens and a short walk from Notre-Dame and the Musée d’Orsay.

📍7th Arrondissement (Eiffel Tower): An upscale district with the Eiffel Tower, Champ de Mars park, and the majestic Hôtel des Invalides.

📍Montmartre (18th Arrondissement): Perched on a hill with an artsy, village-like charm and stunning views over Paris. Lots of steps, so be mindful with strollers!

We checked out the relatively new immersive scienc

We checked out the relatively new immersive science museum in Paris @science_experiences — a 1h30m guided experience that takes you through different worlds: the universe, oceans, Earth’s core, and more!

👩‍🔬 The concept? You move room to room with a guide who breaks down the science behind what you’re seeing. It’s not exactly interactive, but definitely immersive thanks to the ambiance.

⚠️ Heads up for visitors—the tour is only in French, so if you don’t speak any, you will feel lost.

⭐ What we loved:

✔️ The gas experiment
✔️ Seeing a life-size model of the tallest person in the world
✔️ Some of the presenters were great storytellers with fascinating science facts
✔️ The VR experience at the end (costs extra)

❌ What could be better:

❌ Long wait times—we booked in advance but still waited 45+ minutes to get in
❌ Flow between rooms was unclear—more structure would help
❌ Not super hands-on for kids—more of an “observe and learn” vibe than a touch-and-play one (unlike La Villette’s Science Museum)

Would we recommend it? Yes, if you speak French and enjoy an original science experience but it’s quite expensive for what it is.

The Children’s Gallery at the Centre Georges Pom

The Children’s Gallery at the Centre Georges Pompidou is hosting its last exhibition for young kids before the museum closes for renovations in summer 2025—for five whole years! So we went to check it out.

Even better? Entry was completely free because it was the first Sunday of the month, when most museums in Paris open their doors for free (just make sure to book a time slot online beforehand!).

The exhibition, “Il était une ville” (“Once Upon a City”), by artist Sara de Gouy, was a hit with the kids. They got to play, create imaginary plants, and learn fun facts about nature. The slot is for 45mins and then you’re free to explore the rest of the museum.

Before heading out, we took the famous Pompidou escalators all the way up to the top, where we soaked in some of the best rooftop views of Paris.

❄️⛷️ We’ve wrapped up another week of family skiing during the February school break in Tignes, France. When we first moved to France, we had never skied before—now, it’s starting to feel like a natural part of life here.

The best part? Watching the kids fearlessly take on the slopes. Learning to ski at a young age feels like such a gift—one they’ll carry with them for life. It’s so much harder to start later! I put on skis for the first time after 40, and I won’t lie—it’s been tough. But that hasn’t stopped me from trying. Every day, I pushed myself out of my comfort zone, taking lessons for adults at the same time as the kids. And as I watch my kids thrive in both, I remind myself: growth has no age limit. They inspire me to keep learning, keep falling, and most importantly—keep getting back up.

🇬🇧 Living in Paris means London is just a quick Eurostar ride away, and we regularly hop over to see family, friends, and revisit our favourite spots.

Here’s what we loved this time:

🥯Eating through Borough Market with lovely bagels @moisheslondon that I bring in large batches to Paris and freeze 😀, best coffee @monmouthcoffee and all sorts of world food @boroughmarket
🏙️Enjoying views from @theshardlondon thanks to an invite from a friend who works there and has 360 degrees over London each day!
🔭 Visit to the free Science museum - packed with kids and activities over the school break
🍰Cake and tea @ottolenghi_restaurants - there are promises of a Paris restaurant being opened 🙏
💡New light installations across town - the last one is at Tottenham Court Rd station
