Les Sources de Cheverny Review: A Relaxing Stay in the Loire Valley

If you’re looking for a Les Sources de Cheverny review to decide whether it’s worth booking, here’s my honest take after a solo stay in the Loire Valley in spring 2026.

I booked this trip with a very specific idea in mind: I wanted somewhere I could easily reach by train from Paris, escape into the French countryside for a few days, be properly surrounded by nature, and ideally have a spa and pool on-site so I didn’t feel the need to go anywhere once I arrived.

After doing quite a bit of research (I’d shortlisted 8 options in my guide to Weekend Spa Breaks near Paris), I ended up choosing Les Sources de Cheverny. This boutique countryside hotel is set in the heart of the Loire Valley, known for its peaceful setting, scattered cottage-style rooms, Caudalie spa, and two on-site restaurants including a Michelin-starred option. Set across a quiet estate near Château de Cheverny, the hotel is designed to feel more like a small village than a traditional resort, with nature quite literally all around you.

So, did it live up to what I was looking for?

Getting There

One of the reasons I chose Les Sources de Cheverny was how easy it is to reach without a car. I took the train from Gare d’Austerlitz to Blois – Chambord station, then ordered an Uber on the spot for the final 20 minutes to the hotel, which cost €30 (the hotel charges €65 for a private transfer on the same route). One minute you’re in Paris, and the next you’re driving past open fields and quiet country roads.

Check-in was smooth and relaxed. While I was getting settled, my suitcase had already been taken to my room, and I was offered a refreshing drink along with a small welcome gift, a Caudalie face cream. When I walked into the room, there was also a basket of fruits and cakes waiting, which immediately made the whole stay feel a bit more personal.

Hotel Layout and Rooms at Les Sources de Cheverny

One of the things that really stood out to me was the layout. Rather than having a single main building, the 49 rooms are spread across standalone houses dotted around the estate. Each one looks slightly different from the outside, but they all have that cosy, home-like feel. Some open onto terraces with loungers overlooking the fields, while others face a quieter courtyard. The Junior Suites and Suites also have a separate living area, which makes them a better option if you’re travelling as a family.

But what really makes it special is the setting. You’re surrounded by forest, countryside, and open space in every direction.

What I noticed throughout my stay was that even though the hotel was clearly busy (especially at breakfast and dinner), during the day it felt incredibly quiet. I barely saw anyone.

I stayed in a Superior Room and, travelling solo, I didn’t really mind that it was on the smaller side. The bed was extremely comfortable, and everything, from the towels to the bathrobe and slippers, felt high quality. I also appreciated the small details: an Illy coffee machine, Mariage Frères tea, and plenty of lighting options for reading in bed.

One thing to note: the windows in my room were quite small, so it didn’t get a huge amount of natural light. I was lucky with the sunshine, so it didn’t really bother me, but on a grey day, I think it might have felt quite different.

What stayed with me most, though, was the overall atmosphere. Birds constantly singing, butterflies everywhere, wildflowers growing along the paths. So peaceful!

The Spa at Les Sources de Cheverny

The spa is located in a separate château-style building and uses Caudalie products throughout, which ties in nicely with the overall feel of the hotel. Inside, there’s a relaxation pool, a hammam, lounge areas, and treatment rooms. It’s definitely more of a place to unwind than somewhere you’d come to properly swim.

I booked a 2-hour treatment, a full body massage and facial, for €245. Price-wise, it felt in line with most spa hotels, and the experience itself was genuinely relaxing. That said, one thing didn’t quite make sense to me: if you don’t book a treatment, you have to pay €42 just to access the spa. As a hotel guest, that felt a bit unnecessary, especially given the limited facilities. Personally, I wouldn’t pay that just for access.

The gym is right next door and free to use, but it’s very basic. There’s a rowing machine, a bike, a treadmill, a few mats and weights that feel like they’ve been there for years. I had planned to do a proper strength workout but ended up sticking to bodyweight exercises instead.

The outdoor pool deserves a mention on its own. It’s open from mid-April to October depending on the weather, and it’s surprisingly quiet, almost as if not everyone discovers it. It’s a gorgeous spot and I ended up spending most of my time there on a lounger with a book.

Dining at Les Sources de Cheverny

There are two restaurants on-site, and food ended up being one of the highlights of my stay. Everything is built around local, seasonal, and fresh ingredients, which really comes through in the flavours.

The main restaurant, L’Auberge, is where breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served. There’s also a rotisserie grill, so you can actually watch the chefs in action, which adds to the whole experience. On sunny days, the terrace extends into the garden under a shaded pergola, making it a really lovely spot to sit and linger a bit longer.

I ended up eating there twice a day, and dinner was consistently excellent. The menu changes daily, focuses on seasonal ingredients, and at €45 for a three-course daily special meal, it felt like very good value.

Breakfast, however, didn’t quite match that standard. The cold options were great with fresh yoghurts and local honey but the hot dishes were a bit bland and under-seasoned.

There’s also Le Favori, the 1-star Michelin restaurant on-site, open from Wednesday to Sunday. It’s a more formal experience, and you’ll want to dress up a bit for it. I didn’t get around to eating there during my stay, so it’s definitely something to save for next time, ideally with my partner or the whole family.

Things to Do at the Hotel and Nearby

After checking out my room on arrival, I borrowed a pair of wellies from the boot room and went for a walk through the forest on the grounds of the estate, which is about a 1.6km walk.

If you feel like exploring, the hotel has bikes you can borrow for free, with locks included, which makes it really easy to head out and discover the surrounding Loire Valley at your own pace. The cycling routes are well signposted and very easy to follow, so you don’t need to overthink anything in advance. It only took me about 15 minutes to cycle to the beautiful Château de Cheverny, which makes it a perfect, low-effort outing if you want to fit in at least one château visit during your stay.

Beyond cycling, the hotel also offers a full programme of wellbeing activities on weekends, depending on the season. This includes yoga classes, guided relaxation sessions, and wellness-focused retreats throughout the year, often centred around slowing down and reconnecting with nature. I stayed midweek so didn’t take part in any of these as they were not available, but it’s the kind of place where you could easily structure a stay around that slower rhythm if you wanted to.

There are also really cosy communal spaces next to the spa building, almost like relaxed living room areas. You’ll find board games, a pool table, a piano, and plenty of comfortable sofas. It’s one of those spots that’s easy to miss but actually really nice to spend time in, especially on quieter afternoons.

If visiting with kids, definitely stop by the farm which has lots of different animals living inside.

Final Thoughts: Is Les Sources de Cheverny Worth It?

To wrap up this Les Sources de Cheverny review, it really delivered on the peaceful countryside escape I was looking for. It’s easy to reach from Paris, surrounded by nature, quiet without ever feeling empty, and comfortable enough that you don’t feel the need to leave unless you actually want to.

There are a few small downsides—the spa access fee if you don’t book a treatment, the very basic gym, and a breakfast that didn’t quite match the rest of the experience—but none of them really took away from the stay as a whole.

If you’re planning a solo break or a slow countryside escape, Les Sources de Cheverny is a really solid choice. It’s the kind of place where you can properly switch off, slow down a bit, and just enjoy being somewhere quiet—and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
